Power Flow Tuned Exhaust Systems - Now Sporting a Certain “European Flair”!
Until December 2017, European General Aviation pilots had not been able to easily install a Power Flow Tuned Exhaust System on their EASA registered aircraft. Unless Power Flow already held EASA validation on the STC’d kit specific to their aircraft, the agency would not approve the installation. Power Flow had attempted a couple of EASA validations on their STCs but encountered a variety of obstacles which prevented full validation.
Now, thanks to a recent policy change, EASA registered aircraft may apply for a specific single airframe serial number approval from EASA for a one time application fee of €239. EASA says that provided that the STC meets seven specific criteria (all of which are met by all of the company’s Tuned Exhaust Systems), they will issue the approval. EASA further guarantees that they will either issue an approval specific to that aircraft or they will refund the Customer’s application fee.
Working through their Authorized Dealer in the U.K., Airspeed Aviation, LTD in Derby, Power Flow has successfully received approval for the installation on two Cessna 177RG aircraft. They have also received approval for a Mooney M20J that had been trying for over five years to obtain EASA approval as well as a German registered Diamond DA40.
The EASA approval process generally takes less than 30 days and requires that Power Flow provide a letter of authorization specific to a particular aircraft. Power Flow provides this letter at no cost. For UK customers, we direct all inquiries through our exclusive UK Authorized Dealer, Airspeed Aviation (www.DerbyAeroClub.com). Once you place your order for the exhaust system we will add $50.00 to the order for an FAA form 8130 Airworthiness approval that will reference your approved EASA validation.
“We are thrilled that EASA has created a pathway through the regulations to allow EASA aircraft owners to benefit from the terrific safety and performance improvements that a Power Flow Tuned Exhaust adds to their aircraft.” stated Darren Tilman, General Manager of Power Flow Systems.

Power Flow’s Tuned Exhaust Systems are both a performance and a safety improvement for your aircraft and engine. The patented design is a true “tuned” exhaust that works by timing (or “tuning”) the high and low pressure pulses created during the engine’s exhaust cycle to more completely empty each cylinder of spent exhaust gases.
Exhaust system tuning has been utilized for decades to increase engine performance. It is a well proven concept that yields an improvement of 15% - 18% in the combustion efficiency of a given engine. This improvement produces the following specific performance improvements on the airframes for which Power Flow’s systems have been tested and approved:
Ø Improved Take-Off Performance (30m - 100m reduction in ground roll)
Ø 5 - 7 knot increase in cruise speed for aircraft with constant speed propellers, or:
Ø Static Thrust increased by 30 - 130 RPM on aircraft with fixed pitch propellers
Ø 10% – 15% increase in rate of climb
Ø Fuel consumption reduced by 2 - 5 liters per hour at equivalent airspeed
Ø CHT’s reduced by 6O - 8O C
Ø Increase in Service Ceiling of 600 – 1,500 meters with a corresponding improvement in performance at high density altitudes
Ø Safer cabin heat - the tuned exhaust system consists primarily of mandrel bent, long sealed tubes with minimal welded area. Fewer welds = greatly reduced chance of a weld cracking and leaking harmful exhaust gases to your cabin heater.
Power Flow has been in business since 1999. Our Tuned Exhaust System is now installed and flying on over 5,000 General Aviation aircraft worldwide making it one of the most thoroughly tested and widely accepted performance upgrades available for the airframes listed below.
